find any of 'em.
TrickBoys: RICK: Bunny, did we have a copy of "Good Little Girl?"

TrickBoys: RICK: I don't have any idea.
TrickBoys: RICK: I don't know about those bands either.
TrickBoys: RICK: The only thing I know for sure is that Steve Albini is doing
the liner notes.
TrickBoys: RICK: We don't have anything to do with it.
TrickBoys: RICK: if anybody knows about it, please let us know.
SPINmc: Remember: We'll be giving stuff away at the end of the chat, so stick

TrickBoys: BUN E: we've got two songs in the new Howard Stern movie.
TrickBoys: BUN E: We're doing a two-sided single with Albini for Sub Pop

TrickBoys: RICK: This summer I got a new Hamer five-neck guitar all in
checkerboard.
TrickBoys: RICK: And I picked up a few other things--I got a Gibson Les Paul
with an Explorer headstock.
SPINmc: KRAMER KG:
Rick, where'd you come up with the wacky lyric style on "Look Out"? It's unique! A great
song.
TrickBoys: I don't remember the lyrics to tell you the truth.
TrickBoys: I think I heard the word "chicane" on an ELO record and I had to
go look it up in the dict
TrickBoys: ionary.
TrickBoys: I'd have to go listen. But I can't since I'm on SPINonline.
SPINmc: HansonBro:
You guys are probably the hardest working touring band ever. Do you have a rough idea of
how many gigs Cheap Trick has actually played?
TrickBoys: BUN E: 3,000 at least; we've been doing this for 23 years.
SPINmc: MrCoasteRick:
Any chance you might release another live CD or video any time in the future?
TrickBoys: BUN E: Yeah, live Cd perhaps next summer of the '70s stuff.
TrickBoys: BUN E: A video's a maybe. The live thing
TrickBoys: is g0nna happen.
SPINmc: Bry9999:
I thought Woke Up With a Monster was a great album -- as are ALL your albums! But do you
think any of them really capture your sound?
TrickBoys: RICK: They all sound fine to me.
SPINmc: We'll be giving away a signed Sex America Cheap Trick box and limited
ed. singles at the end of the chat...stick around.
TrickBoys: But thanks Bry.
SPINmc: JPMlp90:
rick, please talk about your main LesPaul cherry sunburst that gets that great high endy
tone. What kinda pickups, strings, etc.
TrickBoys: RICK: Pickups are original 58-60 Patent fly-4 humbuckers.
TrickBoys: RICK: Strings, at the beginning of the tour I use .10 high E's.
TrickBoys: RICK: At the end of the tour I use .12s or .13s.
TrickBoys: RICK: I get stronger, it's not like in the studio. That's all the
technical junk I got.
TrickBoys: RICK: as far as brand I don't know what I use.
SPINmc: Radiozap:
which bands do you find yourselves listening to now?
TrickBoys: BUN E: Babe the Blue Ox, Wilco, and Rusted Root.
TrickBoys: BUN E: and the new King Crimson.

TrickBoys: RICK: We are happy to say that we have people who listen to are music
from all lines
TrickBoys: RICK: of communication-male, female, questionable. We plan to keep it
that way.
TrickBoys: RICK: I'm looking for a couple of tickets for my son to go see Pearl
Jam in Cleveland on the
TrickBoys: 22nd. Can you help us out?
SPINmc: SaraTurtl:
do you remember doing the music to a movie called "rock and Rule"
which was animated? I've allways wanted to get the music to that.
TrickBoys: BUN E: Yeah, available on video from about 1981.
TrickBoys: RICK: Cheap Trick and Blondie and Lou Reed are characters in the
movie and do songs.
SPINmc: RiverLeth:
Any chance of seeing great songs buried on soundtracks, like 'Mighty Wings' and 'Up the
Creek' being reissued?
TrickBoys: BUN E: In about two years, Sony has an idea to do a rarities package
of rare stuff and B-sides
TrickBoys: BUN E: Pick up all the rare stuff that's lying around and put it on a
CD or two.
SPINmc: TVJV:

TrickBoys: RICK: one vinyl single only.
SPINmc: ScotiebaBun E:
Will the Trickfest cassette tapes be accessable to those who were unable to attend? If you don't make them available in some fashion some damn Bootlegger will.
SPINmc: Ask Rick Nielsen & Bun E. Carlos anything...and then stick around
for the trivia question at the end of the chat
TrickBoys: RICK: The Trickfest cassette tapes were for the fans and they were
available for 30 days and
TrickBoys: RICK: the 30 days have passed a long time ago. If someone bootlegs
it, there you go.

TrickBoys: RICK: I believe it's gonna be in February. We should probably make
the record first.

With 20 years under your belt as a band, do you have one song that stands out as a
personal favorite?
TrickBoys: BUN E: not really; they come and they go.
TrickBoys: RICK: There's certain--I think that's a good answer. There's
somethings that you like and you
TrickBoys: play it a lot and then you gotta find a new favorite.
TrickBoys: Listening to the box set, I'm in the band, but I'd be a fan of the
band.
TrickBoys: That's not to solicit any sales, that's just an opinion.
SPINmc: Dustoff06:
Is there any part of the world where you haven't toured, but you'd like to?
TrickBoys: China, Thailand, Russia we haven't been to.
TrickBoys: We've been to Chile before and Mexico. We haven't played much in
South America.
TrickBoys: We haven't played in Europe much. Is it still there?
SPINmc: Pyke tamp:
What are some of the best and worst experiences from the road?
TrickBoys: BUN E: the worst is when the bus breaks down.
TrickBoys: BUN E: cause you still gotta ride on the thing. The best--you really
can't talk too much
TrickBoys: about that. Big gigs can be fun sometimes.
SPINmc: We'll be giving away a signed Sex America Cheap Trick and 4 singles
with the alternate version of "I Want You To Want Me" on it...so stick around.
TrickBoys: BUN E: We did a show for about 40,000 people. Those are kind of fun.
TrickBoys: RICK: TO play in front of that many people and to still go over well
is kind of a treat.
SPINmc: JPMlp90:
BunE: were you satisfied with the last tour by playing older material? Will this trend
continue?
TrickBoys: BUN E: I think we're gonna start doing newer stuff again. We did older
material last summer just
TrickBoys: for the box set. I think we'll do stuff from most of our
records now.
SPINmc: HansonBro:
The liner notes in the Box Set mention that Gonna Riase Hell is about the Jonestown
Massacre. Care to elaborate?
TrickBoys: RICK: I think "Gonna Raise Hell" was done before the Jonestown
Massacre.
TrickBoys: RICK: is that right, Bun E.?
TrickBoys: BUN E: I don't remember.
TrickBoys: BUN E: I thought it was about doing too many drugs or something.
TrickBoys: RICK: I thought it was about somebody in charge of the Evil Empire;
TrickBoys: RICK: somebody's evil twin or something. I think we're gonna have to
look back or something.
SPINmc: MDKraft81:
What song's in the Stern movie???
TrickBoys: RICK: Being that the movie is something of a period piece;
"Surrender" and "I Want You to Want
TrickBoys: Me." A different version. Being that he's a DJ he's playing some
older stuff. He's been
TrickBoys: a Cheap Trick fan for a long time. We were in the running to be
the live band as well.
SPINmc: KRAMER KG:
Bun do you play the giant drumsticks anymore? And when are you coming to San
Francisco!!??!!
TrickBoys: BUN E: I don't play them anymore cause they wreck my stuff. We'll be
in Frisco maybe after
TrickBoys: Christmas, maybe in '97.
SPINmc: I'm dumping all the questions...so send, send, send!

TrickBoys: RICK: oh, a number of times they mentioned it.

TrickBoys: RICK: oh, there's Bob Dole again on TV! Ha Ha!
SPINmc: Matrialis:
Rick, did you enjoy working with Material Issue?

TrickBoys: RICK: I played about 3 or 4 tunes, little tunes, just adding stuff.
SPINmc: SoCalHRT:
Bands like Smashing Pumpkins and The Posies consider you a big influence, who influenced
you?
TrickBoys: RICK: Smashing Pumpkins and the Posies.
TrickBoys: RICK: the music we grew up with. We're still getting influenced. If
you hear something you
TrickBoys: enjoy it's an influence.
TrickBoys: BUN E: I think f you listen to the Panno family you hear where we're
coming from.
SPINmc: We'll be giving away prizes at the end of the chat...so stick around.
SPINmc: BBINDY1:
Does Carlos smoke any more?
TrickBoys: BUN E: I quit tobacco four years ago.
SPINmc: GONesQ:
how many picks does Rick go thru in 1 gig?
TrickBoys: RICK: Come to the show, stand in the front row and you count 'em.
TrickBoys: RICK: I would think 300.
TrickBoys: RICK: I play the guitar pretty hard.
SPINmc: Bad Lue:
hey guys i'm from rockford. you playing at home soon?
TrickBoys: BUN E: Don't think so. RICK: We don't have anything scheduled.
TrickBoys: RICK: We were supposed to do two shows here but we had to reschedule.
We don't know
TrickBoys: what that date is yet.
SPINmc: Fishkin11:
Where do you rank "Heaven Tonight" against your other records? I think it's one of rock
and roll's truly great albums.
TrickBoys: RICK: I think you're a great judge. We think it's a good album.
TrickBoys: RICK: I think there's good stuff on every album. Thanks for having
the opinion.
SPINmc: About 10 more minutes with the TrickBoys, Rick & Bun E. then we'll be
giving away stuff
SPINmc: BogeyW:
Is there another Trickfest in works? If so, for when?
TrickBoys: BUN E: We're workin' on it. Probably '97 somewhere. They're real
difficult to arrange.
TrickBoys: BUN E: We're still working.
SPINmc: DTHEATRE:
Everyone has a bad video copy of the classic Budokan concert from Japanese TV. Why not
release it from the master copy?
TrickBoys: BUN E: Got the master copy?
TrickBoys: RICK: We don't know where it is. BUN E: We never owned the TV show.
SPINmc: Pokey107:
rick how many of your costumes match your guitars
TrickBoys: RICK: None ever did.
TrickBoys: RICK: One costume. I don't wear a costume.
SPINmc: AmosM4540:

TrickBoys: BUN E: Not much.
TrickBoys: BUN E: the tour's over.
TrickBoys: RICK: no, they're playing in Florida.
TrickBoys: BUN E: no, they asked us but we already had shows booked.
TrickBoys: BUN E: It would be a gas to do 'em.
SPINmc: MrCoasteRick:
Bun E., what's the story behind the design on your drumkit?
SPINmc: Just a few more minutes with Cheap Trick...
TrickBoys: BUN E: I had an artist paint my bass-drum heads for me. One has a WAC
saluting an American
TrickBoys: flag. That was for the Sex, America, Cheap Trick scene. The other
is a psychedelic Rabbit.
TrickBoys: BUN E: That's about it.
SPINmc: Then we'll be giving away stuff...signed stuff and rare stuff...you
know, stuff.
SPINmc: Idiot1019:
Is there some personal anticdote behind "Surrender"?
TrickBoys: RICK: In a strange way, I had an aunt that was in the WACs (women's
army corps) and if
TrickBoys: you can imagine your parents listening to a KISS record,
well--the idea was pretty sick.
TrickBoys: The idea of your parents barely clothed, frolicking, listening to
Kiss, it was pretty sick
TrickBoys: but it intrigued me.
SPINmc: Bry9999:
Bun E., how did you like being highlighted on Beavis and Butthead?
TrickBoys: BUN E: It was pretty cool man.
TrickBoys: RICK: I think we all felt honored and we'd love to meet 'em.
SPINmc: UNIBLAB 0:

TrickBoys: RICK: Yes, but does this mean that this person wants to be one?
TrickBoys: RICK: Well, one time we had a girl UPSed herself to us in a box.
TrickBoys: Sent it to backstage where we were playing. When the box opened
there was kind of
TrickBoys: a bad odor. She was in there longer than she thought she'd be.
SPINmc: OOF! That's the last question for Rick and Bun E. from Cheap Trick...
SPINmc: Thank you gentlemen for stopping by to chat with us!
SPINmc: Wait! There's still more to the saga!
